Curacao – February 2023

This small island in the Caribbean is one of my absolute favorite stops. I first visited this port of call in February 2023 while on a seven-night cruise out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. I had purchased an excursion through Royal Caribbean called “Beach Break Express.” After meeting the tour guides at the pier, we loaded onto a small tour bus and drove to Piscaderabaai from the port in Willemstad. After the short drive, we stopped at Pirate Bay Beach for several hours. This beach was AMAZING.

When you imagine a tropical island, with white sand beaches and tiki type umbrellas, this beach is just that. Picturesque. There are several restaurants at this beach and a dive shop. I spent most of my time here snorkeling in the clear, turquoise water. I saw at least two dozen different types of fish in addition to hundreds of parrot fish eating away at the coral. You can actually hear them crunching under water, it is surprisingly loud. This location has been the best snorkeling site I have experienced in the Caribbean thus far.

After leaving the beach, the bus took us back to the port. I had plenty of time left to explore the town and souvenir shops. I crossed the famous Queen Emma Bridge, a floating wooden drawbridge. From anywhere in the town, you can see bright colorful buildings this island is known for. Right outside the port area is an old fort you can visit if historical sites are your thing. I even popped into a tattoo studio for some fresh ink.

The people in Curacao are very friendly, the shops are reasonably priced, and the food is tasty. I would definitely put Curacao on your bucket list if you’re looking for a tranquil, beachy island with a really cool vibe. There is a phrase popular among the locals, “dushi bida,” which translates to sweet life. Life is absolutely sweet on this treasure island. I will be visiting again soon and I’m taking Mini Muffin along. Stay tuned for some TikToks from her.
